Parent/Teacher Communication

Strong parental involvement is an important part of the overall well-being of the students in my classroom.  In order to foster a learning community between home and school a steady stream of communication is essential.  I am always available by phone, e-mail, classroom website, and in person visits.  In addition, I try to frequently send home curriculum information, schedule events in school/after school that parents can participate in, and encourage involvement at any level.

This is a letter home to parents before we started a history unit in social studies.  Before the start of major units I like to send a letter explaining my goals for the upcoming unit, generally outline what students will be studying, and how parents can assist their children with what we are learning in school.  This allows everyone to be on the same page.

Every month at the end of a writing unit we have an author celebration.  For our poetry celebration we decided to invite parents to come in and share our poems and some of the other writing we had been doing recently.  Occasionally parents are invited in for other events as well, such as market day during our economics unit.  This allows students to show off all of their hard work and for parents to feel more connected to our classroom.

Invitation

Every week I send home a newsletter to parents.  This usually includes upcoming curriculum, school events, and any other news I would like to pass on.  This is also posted on the classroom website each week to allow easy access for all parents.
