Reading

  • All students should be provided an environment that allows their love of reading to develop through an all encompassing classroom environment that values and promotes literacy.
  • Students should be given time to reflect on their literacy experiences through higher level discussions with both peers and a teacher.
  • A balanced literacy approach through the use of whole class instruction, guided reading, shared reading, and independent reading.

Vocabulary Lesson Sequence- This is a short series of lessons working one on one with students who were struggling with vocabulary comprehension while reading.

Mental Images Unit- This is a 10 day overview (including several full lesson plans) of one of the comprehension strategies that I taught throughout the year. I also planned full units for schema, inferring, asking questions, and synthesizing.

Inferring Artifacts- Here are some examples of student work I designed to accompany some of the lessons in my inferring unit.

Sample Lesson 1- The first in a 3 day lesson during my inferring unit. Students were asked to perform a close reading of a poem which required them to actively infer to figure out what the poem was talking about.

Book Club- Along with guided reading groups, I also started two book clubs in my classroom. This provides an overview of how book club got started with one of my reading groups.
