Social Studies

  • Students must leave the classroom with an understanding of the increasingly complex world around them and how people interact within it.
  • It is important to take advantage of the many authentic integration opportunities that social studies allows (persuasive writing, reading about history, informational writing)
  • Essential component of elementary curriculum because it helps develop responsible citizens

History Unit- This is a full social studies unit that I designed using state and district standards.  I also created units for geography, economics and civics/citizenship throughout the year.

Student Artifacts- These are a small sampling of the materials I created to accompany the unit.

Sample Lesson 1,2-Two sequenced lessons. Both are focusing on aspects of timelines and using chronological order.

Student work from these lessons can be found under the artifacts tab.

Sample Lesson 3,4- The first lesson focuses on how communities change over time. The second lesson discusses important contributions people have made to our community in the past. Student artifacts correspond to both of these lessons.

Reflections- After each lesson, I like to take time to think about what went well and what I need to adapt for future lessons.  I have modeled my thinking for some of the full-length lesson plans that I provided here.
